Never Graduate From Learning

"May, more than any other month of the year, wants us to feel most alive."  - Fennel Hudson

Many of us will attend graduation ceremonies this month, or perhaps we are the graduate ourselves. It’s a wonderful sense of accomplishment and achievement to graduate and great celebration is warranted. However, making learning a part of your everyday life can be incredibly beneficial to your overall health. Some of the health benefits of lifelong learning include:

It Keeps Your Brain Healthy
Of all the health benefits of lifelong learning, this one is particularly important. According to a study by the University of California at Irvine, learning is super-beneficial for brain health. It keeps brain cells working at optimum levels, which can limit age-associated memory and cognitive decline. The brain has a greater chance of continuing to function well, as long as we are acquiring more knowledge.

Reduces Stress Levels
Lifelong learning is great for managing the physical and emotional symptoms of stress. An intellectually stimulating lifestyle was found to reduce stress in executives by 68%. When we are less stressed, we are apt to perform better in our professional lives - and our personal lives, too.

Encourages Healthy Social Life
Humans are social creatures. We crave interaction and learning new skills is a great way to open ourselves up to new social possibilities -and people - we might not have encountered otherwise. Learning sparks social engagement, which leads to feeling healthy and happier in all aspects of our lives.

Enhances Motivation, Creativity and Innovation
When we introduce new skills and information into our daily life, we give ourselves an opportunity to open our minds and appreciate new opportunities. In addition, it fills us with a renewed sense of purpose and spurs us towards problem-solving action.

Author Tim Lebbon writes, “Humans crave knowledge, and when that craving ends, we are no longer human.” Remember, our brains do not stop evolving when we finish a program of study or earn a degree. Choose to be a lifelong learner and reap the healthy rewards every day!

Be well,
Your friends at the Healer Within Foundation

Comments Submitted

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016
(CARA) required the Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force develop the Draft Report on Pain Management Best Practices: Updates, Gaps, Inconsistencies, and Recommendations  for pain management, including chronic and acute pain. CARA also required the public to have an opportunity to provide comments on the Draft Report during a 90 day public comment period, which occurred December 31, 2018 – April 1, 2019.

HWF President, Josie Weaver, has submitted comments on behalf of the Healer Within Foundation which may be accessed through the HWF Blog. An excerpt from her comments: "As a global consideration, Qigong can also be added to best practices for acute and chronic pain management, because by definition Tai Chi is a moving form of Qigong. Therefore, Qigong forms and practices, like Tai Chi forms and practices, also belong to the category of exercise called Moving Meditation (MM) which consists of conscious and intentional movement or body positioning, a focus on breathing, and a cleared or calm state of mind resulting in deep states of relaxation."

To view all public comments, visit the Federal eRulemaking Portal at: www.regulations.gov using docket number - HHS-OS-2018-0027

Thank you, Josie!
